Little Cayman
Sept 22 update All of the resorts suffered some damage, but most are planning on opening up again some time in October. Southern Cross Club lost bungalows # 5,6,7 and 8.? Even the foundation is gone on 7 and 8. We lost both docks, and bungalows 1 and 2 lost a few windows, but are very fixable. All of the other bungalows are fine. All in all I consider us to be very lucky, and view it as an opportunity to improve. We are in the process of cleaning the massive piles of garbage on the beach. It is a daunting task that seems overwhelming at times. One step at a time for now. I am not certain when SCC will be opening for business, but hope to have an answer by Friday this week.Sept. 15th Update
I just talked to Whitman Tatum on Little Cayman. He's a good source
of info because he does construction and repairs and is very involved
in the cleanup effort.
Everyone on Little Cayman is fine. Power is back and some people
even have landline phone service. Many of the residents have returned
from the other islands.
The severe damage on Little Cayman is all in the South Hole Sound
area. One of the buildings at Head of Bay is gone and some other
houses in the area have significant damage. Neptune's Berth condos
are seriously damaged. Southern Cross Club is the hardest hit, having
lost several of the cottages completely; Whitman said the loss is
40% of their occupancy. The other resorts had only minor damage. Every
dock on the island is totally gone.
Little Cayman didn't get much rain at all. While the storm surges in
the ocean caused some flooding ... as much as 4 feet of water in some
places ... the flooding was not as bad or as sustained as it has been
in other storms when there was a lot of rain. The damage was done by
strong winds and powerful waves on the south coast. Many houses have
minor to moderate roof damage from the wind.
Spoke to Carrie few min. ago and she had talk with Whitman this am and news is good.First off he says Conch Club is in good shape structurally. Roof walls windows. He did not go in any condos but out side good shape.Only missing dock. I have asked him to get in touch with Paulette to go into ours and see if flooding or other damage occurred and hopefully will here back from her today. Power to island coming on this am. Cell phones working well hard line down but hopes to get up soon. Damage report is better than previously said. Splash House still intact. Salt Rock Dock fine. Bruce's house lost back of porch. Trevor's house at Head-o-Bay is the house that is no longer standing. SCC is the place with the most damage. Clean up continues he has 10 of the construction workers on island and clearing roads. Guess a barge of some sort washed up so plans are to deal with this this am. Pete H illenbrand is hoping to arrive on island Thur and aid with organization. My thoughts are after he arrives we may organize some containers from Fla specific to Little
From the stormcarib.com site: Re: Friends on Little Cayman Author:Beth Ann(---.dal1-4.29.253.128dal1.dsl-verizon.net) Date: 09-13-04 21:37 Brigitte is my aunt and we've just heard from her at about 7:30CDT. She and Robin are fine and have made something of a circuit of the island. She didn't have much juice left on her cell but this is what she reported: She saw Betty and she is fine. (She didn't mention anyone else specifically but earlier posts said all on the island were fine.) The north shore looked okay. I know they drove as far as Mulaks'. They counted fourteen houses "down" in her words--not sure if that means gone or heavily damaged and don't think we got a complete list but here's what she said: 3 cottages at Southern Cross Captain Charles' house the 1st floor at Neptune's Berth 1st floor at Walkers' Head O'Bay Cristoffers' cottage (Bill's boat is still floating, though) Bruce Eldemire's house All of the sea grapes are gone at Gladys' but the house is okay. She said there is debris everywhere. Driving back to Brigitte's house, the truck got stuck and they had to walk the rest of the way from the airport. The water was four feet deep at some point--up to her chest. I believe this was yesterday morning after they left the shelter (8am). Brigitte's home is fine. Water reached at least 100ft from the shore there. That's all we know for now.
